Review Of Houseproud, Hurtwood-Park-Polo-Country-Club on 2007-04-06
A Polo club? ‘What are we doing there?’ you might ask! We had thought the same thing as we drove through the empty dark night towards what we had no concept of what to expect! A special invite and a long drive – it’s what EnuffSaid lives on!
Entering down the winding gravel driveway (after having had the GPS send us COMPLETELY the wrong way) we had a distinct feeling that the night was going to be worth the drive. Rolling on past the open grassy field and towards what could be seen to be an old converted building with strobes and scanners poking out through the windows onto the grass we parked up and sorted out the equipment. Expecting plenty of photographs, we took ALL the kit!

We met up with Marc, part organiser of the night and on entering noticed just how well presented the venue seemed. We could definitely think about running a night here – the only problem is – it REALLY is in the middle of nowhere! A top quality sound system had been set up at one end of the large hall that makes up the Polo Club building with the bar and toilets at the other. An old wooden building converted with what seemed like great care and design had been thoroughly transformed into house-heaven.
DJs playing funky, uplifting and on occasion slightly more hard-house kept the crowd alive all night – the crowd wasn’t as big as we had expected but it certainly wasn’t a poor turnout for the night! It’s not often that you see the same people dance all night – people really seemed to get into things and this made a big impact on the DJs, who kept feeding off the crowd – pumping the energy back into them.

We counted at least 7 decks, more technology than was really necessary but then the venue and the crowd seemed to suit the overkill. It made a great impression and allowed several DJs to be cuing up CDs and a seamless flow of beats to escape from the speakers. The sound system held up well all night; enough bass in fact to make a bottle jump clean off one of the bar shelves onto the back bar –shocking! It was never really pushed to it’s full potential but the size of the venue meant it wasn’t going to be worth turning it up any louder – it would have become painful!
Overall the crowd were not who we had expected, and there weren’t as many people as we had expected – however, as with many more out of the way, single music style events this is not what makes them successful. Quantity and quality do not always go hand in hand; quality definitely excelled here! If we were MixMag we would probably be raving about how this was potentially one of the great new nights in a great venue – different, well organised and classy and focussed on good energy and good music. We’re not MixMag, but we’re still raving – in both senses of the word!

A huge thanks to Marc for inviting us – our recommendation to you is to push this night hard and to advertise even more, it has the potential to become a shining star reviewed and applauded for everything we mentioned above – an event for real clubbers. Top marks, well worth watching out for more events at www.thisishouseproud.co.uk!
